First-Time Cruising to Bermuda From Philadelphia

Updated: Oct 19

What You Should Know Before You Sail

For travelers throughout Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, South Jersey, Delaware, and the surrounding Mid-Atlantic region, cruising to Bermuda now begins much closer to home.

Norwegian Cruise Line has returned cruising to Philadelphia, and Bermuda is one of the destinations at the center of that return. NCL currently lists round-trip Philadelphia sailings aboard Norwegian Pearl, including seven-day Bermuda itineraries with overnight time at Royal Naval Dockyard. Depending on the specific sailing, NCL also offers Philadelphia itineraries with two overnights in Bermuda.

For someone who has never cruised to Bermuda before, that creates an interesting vacation experience: the ship is part of the vacation, but Bermuda is not reduced to a rushed few hours in port.

More Than a Few Hours in Bermuda

One of the biggest differences between Bermuda and many traditional cruise stops is the opportunity for an extended port time.

Royal Naval Dockyard is Bermuda's primary cruise-ship port; it is also a destination itself, with maritime history, dining, shopping, attractions, and access to transportation connecting visitors with the rest of the island.

An overnight changes how you can approach the island.

You might spend part of your first day getting familiar with Dockyard and the surrounding area, use your full day for a beach or island exploration, and reserve the final morning for something lighter before returning to the ship.

That gives first-time cruisers room to experience Bermuda instead of simply trying to check off attractions.

Your exact amount of time ashore depends on the itinerary you purchase, so always review the arrival, departure, and official all-aboard times for your specific sailing.

Bermuda Is One Hour Ahead of Philadelphia

This is simple, but important.

Bermuda is one hour ahead of Philadelphia. When it is 10:00 AM in Philadelphia, it is 11:00 AM in Bermuda.

During the cruise, follow the time instructions provided by the ship. Your phone may update automatically, but your cruise schedule should always be planned around official ship time.

That becomes especially important when you are away from Royal Naval Dockyard and have transportation involved in getting back to the ship.

A beautiful island day should never end with you racing against the clock.

What Should You Budget Beyond the Port?

Your cruise fare gets you to Bermuda, but your personal island experience will depend on how much you decide to do once you step ashore.

Bermuda can be expensive, but cruise travelers have one important advantage: your accommodations and many of your meals remain aboard the ship. You can therefore decide how much of your vacation budget you want to spend on the island.

For client planning, I use these as practical working ranges:

A simple island day: approximately $50-$80 per person. This can cover public transportation, lighter meals or snacks, and primarily free or low-cost sightseeing.

A comfortable island day: approximately $100-$175 per person. This allows more room for transportation, a beach setup or attraction, lunch, drinks, and some shopping.

A premium experience: $200-$300+ per person. Paid excursions, upscale dining, private transportation, multiple attractions, and larger purchases can quickly move the day into this range.

These are planning estimates rather than fixed Bermuda prices. What you actually spend depends on the experience you create.

One convenience for American travelers is currency: the Bermuda dollar is pegged one-to-one with the U.S. dollar, and U.S. dollars are accepted interchangeably on the island.

Bus. Ferry. Taxi. Explore.

You do not have to stay at the cruise terminal to enjoy Bermuda.

The island has an established public transportation system using its recognizable pink buses and ferries. The current government fare structure includes a $5 cash fare for longer 14-zone trips, $4.50 using a token, and a $19 adult one-day all-zone bus and ferry pass. The ferry can be particularly useful from Dockyard. The Blue Route between Royal Naval Dockyard and Hamilton takes approximately 15-20 minutes, compared with around an hour by bus.

Taxis provide another option for travelers who want convenience or more direct transportation. Visitors cannot rent conventional automobiles in Bermuda, but taxis, buses, ferries, scooters, and small electric two-seat vehicles provide ways to move around the island. Bermuda Tourism Authority

Understanding transportation before you arrive can save both time and unnecessary spending.

Bermuda Your Way

There is no single correct way to experience Bermuda.

For some travelers, Bermuda means pink-sand beaches and turquoise water.

For others, it is history, architecture, maritime culture, food, shopping, or simply slowing down somewhere different.

Horseshoe Bay is particularly recognizable for its pink sand and visitor facilities, while Royal Naval Dockyard brings together Bermuda's naval history and modern cruise tourism. Bermuda tourism also describes the island's culture as a blend of British, African, Caribbean, and Portuguese influences. Bermuda Tourism Authority

For a first cruise, you do not need to experience everything.

A better question is:

What would make Bermuda memorable for you?

Once you know that, the itinerary becomes easier to build around your interests and budget. Bermuda also currently carries a Level 1 - Exercise Normal Precautions travel advisory from the U.S. Department of State, its lowest advisory level.

Your Final Day: Give Yourself Time

Your final morning in Bermuda should be approached differently from your full island day.

If your ship has a mid-afternoon departure, that is not the time I would recommend planning your longest excursion or traveling to the far side of the island.

For CMTA client planning, I prefer building a substantial buffer into the final day.

If the ship were scheduled to sail around 3:00 PM, for example, I would plan to be back aboard by approximately noon. That is intentionally earlier than a cruise line's final required return time.

Why?

Because buses can run late. A taxi can be delayed. Ferry timing matters. Traffic can change. Shopping can take longer than expected. And none of those things are worth gambling your return to the ship over.

Enjoy the morning. Take the pictures. Pick up the last souvenir. Have breakfast.

Then return without the rush.

The ship's official all-aboard time always controls, but creating your own earlier return target gives you something equally valuable on vacation: margin.

Why Cruising From Philadelphia Changes the Experience

For Mid-Atlantic travelers, the vacation can begin differently when the ship leaves from Philadelphia.

NCL is currently the only cruise line sailing from Philadelphia, and the company has built its Philadelphia program around destinations including Bermuda, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Canada and New England. Norwegian Cruise Line

For many regional travelers, that creates the possibility of reaching the cruise terminal by ground transportation instead of beginning the trip with a flight to Florida or another distant cruise port.

That can remove several moving parts from the vacation:

Airfare. Airport baggage. A possible pre-cruise hotel. Transportation from the airport to the hotel or port. Flight delays before you ever reach the ship.

It does not mean every Philadelphia cruise will automatically be cheaper than every cruise departing somewhere else.

It means you now have another option to compare.

And for a traveler who values convenience, especially a family or group purchasing several airline tickets, where the cruise begins can matter almost as much as where it goes.

Thinking About Bermuda?

A first cruise can bring a lot of questions.

Which sailing should I consider?

How long will I actually have in Bermuda?

Which cabin makes sense?

How much should I budget beyond the cruise fare?

Should I use buses, ferries, taxis, or excursions?

What should I do on the final day?

Those questions are part of the planning experience.

Creative Mind Travel Adventures LLC helps travelers examine those pieces before making the reservation so that the decision is based on the complete travel experience, not simply the price displayed for the cabin.

Norwegian currently lists five- and seven-day Bermuda sailings from Philadelphia, while schedules, fares, promotions, taxes, fees, and applicable fuel supplements remain subject to the individual sailing and availability. Norwegian Cruise Line
